Global Ecology and the Human Bubble

I sent the following to my daughter for comment  in January I think ,when much of the worlds attention was focused on Australian fires .Perhaps now is a good time for us to consider whether we  can change our behaviour before being thrust back into the “Rat Race”

Humanity needs to realise that it is a part of Nature/the Earth, a very small part, yet still ,a part of and not ,apart from ‘it.’

It is clear ,our human bubble cannot last !

When you look at  Windy.com  for example and see the active fires, carbon monoxide and other environmental indicators   all over the world (more layers ), you start the see a bigger picture ,  there seemed to be an area of fires burning across the middle of Africa  much larger than those in Australia (possibly savanna?). Later they appeared to be in republic of Congo and the eastern part of DRCongo much of which should be tropical rainforest I think though many of these seem to have gone out over the last few weeks ? Rain ? Update—

These heat signatures are changing constantly since I have been fussing around about posting this .

I can’t vouch for the accuracy of windy.com data and have never even been to Africa let alone the Congo so it is more a feeling ,a strong feeling ,very unscientific I know .

If the Amazon is the lungs of the world then to me the Centre of Africa is the heart of the world ,especially where humanity is concerned ,not just our origins but because when the last wilderness is gone, humanity draws its last natural breath. (I wrote this around 2001- 2002 as part of a poem /song called styx designed to help save ancient forests from clearfell in Tasmania)

Our human bubble ,an illusion of ,separation from ,superiority to,  or  no of need of this nature ,our earth ,sustained for now by  belief in technological fixes ,at the very best can lead to a human maintained world where once there were self-sustaining ecosystems.

Thinking that we are superior to the rest of the natural world or are separate from it, annihilating the last ancient forests and other self-sustaining ecosystems is like tearing off our skin to get away  from our bodies.

As is the idea of casting off this earth for some other planet or permanent heaven ,heaven or hell are here on earth ,we choose .

Imagine that !  ,so numb we don’t realise it, self flailed humanity suddenly becoming aware of what it has done. Too late for nature to provide our needs, to heal us.

So let the fear of climate change or the corona virus make us;

realise how small we really are;

to put our arms around each other and our earth ;

to slow down ;

to look at  the daily annihilation of wilderness and species to feed our greedy desires;

to put our arms around and nurture self-sustaining ecosystems that remain, as if they were our  own  human babies, but realising that life and death are as natural as each other and viruses and one life needing to kill another to survive are just as natural and  that there are many levels to right and wrong .

Pick a forest ,lake ,ocean or grassland near you and realise that you are a part of it ,nurture it ,nurture yourself ,slow down. , It is a part of you ,you are a part of it ,polluting it is polluting yourself!

Our needs are much less than our wants.

Windy.com is also very good to show the concentration of CO from incomplete combustion probably from industrial production this is concentrated over CHINA in a very telling way .

Silhouette of someone looking down at their phone ,zoned out like the TV ,random and pixelated Scrolling addiction is so easy to contract and that is SAD because we cannot live our lives through someone else’s or it will literally disappear, before our eyes.

No Nukes ,NOW

                   NO NUCLEAR WAR OR THREAT OF IT  EVER AGAIN

I have posted this in the  hope that I can add one voice to all the others who wish /demand that  all nuclear weapons held by Russia and USA  and all others be dismantled permanently starting now!! right now !

I believe that whoever started this nuclear arms race ,must continue to take  steps to end it.

Within the next few months  there will be 8 billion (8 thousand million)human beings on this  our one and only Earth home and I believe that most of them wish to survive  and be happy and fulfilled.

Even if 1 billion of us could agree on one thing with utter  conviction then it must happen .

 Surely this one thing would be elimination of all nuclear weapons,

 then  preservation of self sustaining ecosystems i.e. wilderness ,via recognition of our place in nature  with the help of the original peoples of the lands in which we live ; thus if we remember to love ,respect each other and our Earth home we will slow down and bring ourselves back into balance with natural cycles .

We have to accept and love each other, compromise where we don’t agree ,discuss openly to find truth and not be ruled by our fickle emotions which can change in an instant ,what can seem real and immutable may not be .

We can no longer pretend innocence and bury our heads in the sand staying in Plato’s cave of ignorance thinking that we can forever live a little happy cave life with our partner / family and let the rest be taken care of by somebody else,I remember somebody telling me once nearly 30 years ago, it is a case of eternal innocence or eternal vigilance, I think it’s clear now we have to choose the latter

Realise that most of what we think we know is assumption  .

We can learn much via the Internet however algorithms are constantly honed to give us what we want and like , not necessarily the truth, we must seek it earnestly for ourselves. “We hear  what we want to hear and disregard the rest “ The boxer Simon and Garfunkel

PS the mushroom cloud  picture is from  a British Nuclear test on the Montebello Islands  , Australia   June 1956, one month after I was born These were kept secret for 50 years .

 I was shocked when I read the report in an almanac I was browsing ,it read radioactive clouds over Cloncurry(Queensland,near where I was born) radioactive Iodine hundreds of times normal.

The relevance here and the only reason I mention it ,is that I had a stroke when a young man and bladder cancer from unknown causes, mother had a life full of diseases , breast cancer and subsequent mastectomy , thyroid disease finally dying quite young ,though this could be genetic ,however one doctor told me her symptoms were classic signs exposure to radiation.

These radioactive clouds travel thousands of kilometres from the origin, therefore

If there is widespread nuclear war there will be no escape for most of us ,that is why we must prevent it ever happening.

STAY IN THE MOMENT

Our brains may have evolved to predict future events from past experience in order to increase our chances of survival ,however most of the time we are better off ,as I say ,staying IN THE MOMENT !!

As in meditation ,clearing of the  minds chatter (preoccupation with  possible futures and pasts ,often based on false precepts).

Find a way

Unconditional love

 The  David Bowie/Annie Lennox  Queen song ‘Under Pressure’  symbolises the hand in glove relationship we so desperately need, who’s  the hand and  who’s the glove is  just ego and does not matter.  The same with Socialism/ Capitalism Left/Right .

IT DOESN’T MATTER WHO IS RIGHT IF THERE’S NO ONE LEFT

Gaining or regaining  our awareness that we are a part of this, our one and only Earth and not apart from it, needs to be our number 1 priority ,then we will have a chance to rebalance things   eg the imbalance which these wars are  and perhaps have always been a symbol of.

The Lyrics of ‘Loves me like a Rock’ by Paul Simon indicate the importance of unconditional love from a mother for the first 6 years at least according to Jeromy Griffiths ‘Freedom the end of the human condition’ worth a read .

His most original idea is one that we are more like love bonding based Bonobo monkeys than competition based Chimpanzees,  males of which aggressively compete for mates .(Both species are from the Congo and opposite sides of the river ,hows that for comparison)

He therefore makes the point that it is not our nature to be aggressive and violent but loving, if we get unconditional love from our mothers from birth to at least 6 years of age  . Of course her basic needs must be met for her to be able to give this love.

Also, eventually with faith, we may venture out of our PLATO’S deep dark(safe) cave of denial about greater realities and be able to face our true selves in all our ugliness and beauty without judging either.

It must be the responsibility of the father / man /partner to ensure that she can can give this love ,because if her basic needs are not met then she cannot.
